Tony Blair Resigns, Brown Visits the Queen

Tony Blair began the process of handing power to his successor by resigning as Prime Minister. Blair will head to Buckingham Palace to formally resign before the Queen. Gordon Brown will then later go before the Queen to request permission to form a government, a long standing tradition in British politics.(source)

Blair has served as PM for 10 years, being re-elected 3 times with landslide victories. Blair will also be resigning from parliament which will result in a bi-election for his seat in Sedgefield.

It is believed that Mr. Blair will take a position as a special envoy for the international diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East. The Quartet is composed of the US, EU, Russia and UN.(source)
