Obama's Ego

Obama is no foreign policy expert, in fact, he's a moron on foreign policy with no experience, no legislative achievements to his name, and one foreign trip. He shows up to Afghanistan and pronounces to the world that more troops are needed. He was against the surge in Iraq that has worked, despite that he said it didn't, and now proclaims a surge is needed in Afghanistan.

Obama denigrated the troops in Iraq and the incredible gains that have been made there when he said, "With respect to the surge, you know, we don't know what would have happened if the plan that I put forward in January 2007 to put more pressure on the Iraqis to arrive at a political reconciliation to begin a phased withdrawal, what would have happened had we pursued that strategy. I am pleased that as a consequence of great effort by our troops -- but also as a consequence of a shift in allegiances among the Sunni tribal leaders as well as the decision of the Sadr militias to stand down -- that we've seen a quelling of the violence."

We don't know for sure, but we can make an educated guess Barry, there would have been more violence, more death, more destruction, and Al Qaida would have claimed victory. He has not made the connection that the "great effort" by the troops, and the increase in troops, was the inducement of the Sunnis and Shiites to reconcile and quell the violence. It didn't just happen spontaneously.

He can't even bring himself to admit that he was wrong about the surge and how successful it has been. Obama's whole trip has been a circus, even NBC is admitting it now.

The surge has reduced violence but it is not the final solution or definition of success. The whole purpose of the surge was to give Iraqi politicians time to unify the country and pass key laws. It is unclear at this point if the Iraqis have taken advantage of the opportunity the surge has offered to them.

I would like to see Obama admit that his vote on the surge was wrong. I would also like to see McCain admit his vote on authorizing the Iraq war was also wrong.

This trip has been a huge success for Obama thus far. His policy on Afghanistan is great for Canadians. In terms of Iraq, it is time to begin bringing the troops home and allow the Iraqis to sort out their own problems. The overwhelming majority of Americans and the Iraqis would like to see a time table for withdrawing troops.
