Bomb Found on Rome Metro

An explosive device was found on an underground train carriage in Rome.  The metro car which had the device was not currently in use.

News reports state, "The device was found by a train driver in a marshalling yard near the Rebibbia metro station at about 0900 GMT, ATAC said."


It is unclear if the bomb is related to protests from students opposed to austerity measures or if it is linked to Al Qaeda or other Islamic terrorists.

Security concerns are very high approaching Christmas.  Last year, the underwear bomber attempted to detonate a bomb on an overseas flight from Europe to Detroit.  Worries that Islamic terrorists may try to strike targets in Europe and North America remain:

Iraqi officials claimed last week that captured insurgents believed that the suicide bombing in Stockholm that killed only the bomber was part of a series of Christmas season attacks.

Both British and German officials have insisted there have been no new specific threats to their countries over the festive period.

Britain's terror alert has remained unchanged at “severe” while Germany upped its terror alert on Nov. 17, when Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere warned of an increased threat from Islamic extremists.
