This is why. An incredible feat of engineering that will propel Canada, the US and our allies into the 21st century with total air supremacy. No tail hook, no catapult needed. Awesome. Take pride in this, it's your tax dollars at work.
The CF 35 is a compromise like every other piece of equipment (even the office chair you sit in)
Yes, it is a fantastic feat of engineering. Yes it has Low Observable technology and electronic systems and networking that gives it performance that no other platform can match.
No, it does not have long "legs" for extended range flights like the ones needed to get around Canada.
No it does not carry massive loads of ordinance like an F-15 Strike Eagle
No, it isn't particularly cheap (but even competitors designed decades ago are also very expensive).
So we have gotten the best of a limited number of choices, and the only thing we are going to regret is we didn't buy 100 when we had the chance.

True North Strong and Free. Someone tell that airbag defence critic from Newfoundland to go fly a kite.
I hate to point out the obvious, but Canada isn't buying the F35B.
We're purchasing the F35A, a fighter with conventional takeoff and landing capabilities.
James is right... the Canadian version will not have vertical takeoff capabilities.
Though it really is a mute criticism when discussing Canada's choice since Canada doesn't have any aircraft carriers.

Its a beautiful aircraft.
I can't help but wonder what they will do with all the space saved by losing the air-fan in the center of it?
More fuel space? equipment? Sonobouys?
